“Trust, I seek and I find in you. Every day for us something new. Open mind for a different view. And nothing else matters.” -Metallica
Did you know that song was not originally supposed to be released? It was written from a vulnerable state of the lead singer while on the road, meant to be kept private. With some encouragement from the band, it was added to the album and ended up being one of their biggest hits. Starkly contrasting to the typical sound of the band, the ballad gives a soft, yet haunting sound all while displaying extremely sweet and intimate lyrics. Although written from a romantic point of view, I think these lyrics can be taken just about anywhere. Platonically, philosophically, artistically, in self reflection, they fit.
We are all seeking trust in our relationships, no matter what kind. With your partner, your family, the dog you adopted, the stranger at the bar. Don’t forget the biggest trust… the trust within yourself. Trust we seek and find in who? That’s right, you, bitch. Probably one of the hardest trusts to find, ya know? For me at least. It’s like ok, do I trust myself enough to know I can do this big scary thing? Do I trust myself enough to not overshare in a new setting? Do I trust myself enough to not eat this whole sleeve of cookies in one sitting? Do I trust myself enough to know I can do this workout without completely debilitating myself? Sometimes no, and I do it anyway and then it’s fine. Sometimes no, and I do it anyway and then there’s guilt/shame/embarrassment. Sometimes yes, and I do it and it really wasn’t that big of a deal to begin with. Trust is such a hard thing, no matter where you place it, but one thing that doesn’t change, is that you cannot have a positive relationship without it and that is something to think about.
“Every day for us something new.” I know that’s right. Every. dang. day. Something new. Sometimes it’s exciting, sometimes it’s not. Sometimes it makes you want to pluck your eyeballs out- like if you watch the news these days (gross, 0/10 recommend). Every day there is something new to navigate. In the song it is written romantically, which is very sweet to think about. Learning your partner, navigating the good, the bad, the ugly, and the really annoying. Experiencing things together. This never ends, regardless of how long you are together.
“Open mind for a different view.” I would like to say that again. OPEN MIND FOR A DIFFERENT VIEW. I don’t really think I need to dive very deep into this. Just open your damn mind. Live life outside the box society has put you in.
AND NOTHING ELSE MATTTERRRRRSSSSS.
I hope you sang it, because that was my intention. It’s true. It’s you, it’s me, it’s us, it’s our worlds and how they collide or orbit. It’s our relationships, it’s our beliefs, it’s our being. You get to cultivate a life you find worthy of living and when you do that and you’re happy, nothing else matters.
